🌱 Preparing a Climate Vulnerability Assessment for the Nature Conservation Sector 🌱

Climate change is already reshaping natural ecosystems, yet the nature conservation sector remains one of the least understood in terms of climate impacts. Data are limited, and in many areas monitoring systems are only beginning to emerge. These challenges were the focus of a workshop held on 14 July 2026Â as part of the preparatory process for Slovenia's National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
Nature conservation is one of ten priority sectors for which the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning is preparing climate vulnerability and risk assessments in accordance with the Climate Act.
Together with experts from across the sector, we explored key questions, including:
Which climate hazards pose the greatest risks to habitat types, with a particular focus on peatland and grassland habitats?
How can we assess the sensitivity of habitat types to high temperatures and heatwaves, changes in the water regime, and extreme weather events?
How can we evaluate the adaptive capacity of habitat types to the climate hazards under consideration?
Based on expert knowledge and discussion, we also defined numerical assessment scores as well as indicators of sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
We are proud to contribute to a process that will help lay the foundations for a more climate-resilient natural environment in Slovenia.
A sincere thank you to everyone who participated. 🌍
