🌿 Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for the Biodiversity Conservation Sector: Final Expert Workshop 🌿
Our third and final expert workshop is behind us, and it was full of energy! At the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, a diverse group of experts came together from the fields of nature conservation, marine biology, agriculture, forestry, spatial planning, tourism, protected areas and more. This is exactly the mix of knowledge needed when tackling climate change adaptation.
🔍 In the morning, we took a close look at the partial results of the climate vulnerability and risk assessment for the biodiversity conservation sector, prepared in collaboration with the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation (Martina Kačičnik Jančar) and the National Institute of Biology (Borut Mavric). This is the first assessment of its kind in Slovenia for grassland, mire, marine and coastal habitat types. Together, we reviewed and discussed the results, and then turned to a key question: how can we present the findings so that decision-makers understand them and actually use them?
🤝 In the afternoon, we looked for synergies between adaptation measures across sectors, in other words, where a single measure can protect nature, water, soil and people at the same time. We paid particular attention to the pitfalls of maladaptation, where a solution in one sector unintentionally creates a new problem in another.
The results are not an end point but a springboard for further work, data collection and the planning of measures. 🚀
Many thanks to all participants for their fresh ideas and open discussion, and to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and the National Institute of Biology for the excellent collaboration. 🙏
📢 Next comes the final step: the public presentation of the analysis will take place online on Monday, 9 November. If you are interested in how climate change will affect Slovenia’s nature and what we can do about it today, join us and take part in the discussion! 📢
